 "Inexpensive light stand" 2010-01-13

The mantra 'you get what you pay for' comes to mind with the Westcott photo basics light stand. It does the job, but leaves some to be desired, at least for me. My main complaint about this stand is the NOISY spring mechanism joining the segments of the pole. I get that cringe look (like scraping fingernails against chalk board) when raising/lowering it to adjust flash settings or put it at the right height. Maybe mine is an anomaly, but I'm almost at the point where I am embarrassed to use it in a quiet studio setting. For just messing around with umbrellas and off-camera flash, perfect inexpensive stand. Knowing what I know now, I would have opted for the $50 basic Manfrotto stand.

The stand is very sturdy, and with a couple of sandbags holds my 42 inch reflectors very easily. When you need a heavier duty light stand, I recommend this one.

 "Hunk of junk" 2009-11-11

This was designed so poorly, it broke after only 4 or 5 shoots.

I took it apart to see if I could fix it, and found they used tape in areas to keep parts together.

Also, it is very easy to tip over.

"Sturdy, Light Stand for Cheap" 2009-10-30

I am impressed by this sturdy little sucker. It hold my strobe and umbrella very easily. I love the air cushion that it has. It doesn't pinch or slam down when you lower it, and pops up when you unscrew it to move it up. The only thing that was difficult was opening the feet for the first time. Works great so far.

This item is a nice item. Its not the sturdiest (but i think a sand bag will help. It is decently compact and it will hold at least a 42 inch umbrella, flash and pocket wizard. If this thing breaks, i will let update this.
